The long tail concept concist to make a buzz of some out dated items, or product that did not have the first wanted effect.
For example, on some website like Amazon.com, you can buy some documentaries on DVD, that you would even know that this is existing, by buying some other similar items on the first place.
That could actually be very positive for the customer, who is feeling to have the choice with some different product.
On the other hand, we can take as an example, the google case, which by looking for some small entreupreneur, you will find a commercial link for big companies.
We can then actually said that the customer is then guide into some precise choices, and his feeling to have the choice and to be a consum'actor is then wrong.
